COOLING – DATA CENTRES/SERVER

Heat is just one of the many factors that affects performance of Servers / Data Centers. In additions to various technologies, the local Government’s incentive programs needs to be evaluated at the same time, to make good financial sense for Cooling (air conditioning) Servers / Data Centers.

Environment has become a crucial concern for the technology, as IT industry is responsible for creating two per cent of the world’s carbon emissions, what is more, almost a quarter of business IT emissions stem right from the data center. It is expected that the number of server units worldwide will grow by 9 per cent annually from 14 million in 2005 to 24 million by 2011. Reducing emissions remains a tough job for IT managers, especially when combined with the reduced ability to build new data centres and pressure on existing floor space.

Technology leaders will also have to deal with potential government legislation to tax carbon emissions or set a cap-and-trade system, an incentive-based scheme for achieving pollution control. Legislation and controls mean energy management will become an even more significant issue. In Ontario “ Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP)” is one of 30 incentive programs being delivered over the next year for efficiency improvements, energy conservation, reduce local pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases?
